Playboy Bunny: History and Costume
We are just days away from Halloween! So in the spirit of the season, we are going to give you a little back story to an iconic uniform. The Playboy Bunny Uniform.
Everyone over the age of 16 has probably heard of the Playboy Bunny. This company was founded in Chicago in 1953 by Hugh Hefner. The first issue of the magazine, sold for fifty cents a copy, was printed later that year and featured the very famous and beautiful Marilyn Monroe. There was over fifty thousand total copies sold! This gave the company the momentum it needed to create a unique brand and experience. 1953 was a busy year for the company, not only because of its growth in popularity, but because of the growth it had as a business. This was the same year that art director, Art Paul, designed the logo. To this day, the Playboy Bunny is one of the more recognized trademarks in the world.
Even though the magazine is mostly known for its nudes or semi nude images of celebrities and beautiful women, it has also always featured excerpts from interviews with authors, musicians, actors, and many other artists. An example of Playboy hosting an extravagant event was the sold out Playboy Jazz Festival of 1959 featuring world renown jazz musician Louis Armstrong. Playboy has influenced the American culture from becoming a proud forerunner of the sexual awakening period to its influence on the American legislation with its trademark products and iconic uniform. Hefner’s investment in Playboy media, such as the Playboy Penthouse, also helped the company’s brand awareness. It wasn’t until 1960 that the Playboy Bunny uniform was shown to the world.
In 1960, Playboy created the Playboy Club, which resulted in the creation of Playboy bunnies who were originally waitresses for the club. These later became one of the reasons for playboy’s success, and here in today’s era, we still hold this iconic uniform with great adoration. The bunny uniform was just a waitressing suit but was transformed as one of the most recognized uniforms in the world. So when you see a Playboy bunny, think of women taking control of their own sexuality.
We have truly enjoyed telling you all about the wonderful world of Playboy, but you are probably wondering why we related this to Halloween.
